New Art Show: Growing a Sense of Direction by Amy Rice

I've Been Everywhere

Amy Rice's second show this month, Growing a Sense of Direction takes place at the View Art Gallery in Victoria, BC (Canada) October 7th - 29th, 2011.  Read her artist's statement about the show.
I have been exploring themes of direction and navigation in my art (in both the literal and figurative sense) ever since I first picked up my first crayon.  Every piece in this body of work incorporates into it an antique map, globe, atlas page or other directional guide.  I have been setting a course and mapping out a plan. I use the tools at my disposal and yet sometimes I still get lost. I am working at paying better attention and growing the tiny bit of inherent direction I have. -Amy Rice 2011
Amy's work will be available through View Art Gallery and more can be viewed after the jump and on her flickr here.  Psssst!  The top painting titled, "I've Been Everywhere, Man" can be used as a free desktop, courtesy of Amy.  Just click here and save as your desktop image!  Sweet!

The Shop at The Standard Hotel New York will launch their next artist edition tomorrow with Jeff Canham. Past artist editions have included works by KAWS, Ryan McGinness, Julia Chiang and Anthony Lister.

Canham is well known in the surf community – formerly the art director of Surfer magazine – for his colorful typographic compositions, creating designs for Jack Johnson, The Mollusk surf shops, Patagonia, and Roxy.Referencing traditional nautical flags, Canham's edition of flags and pennants playfully reinterprets the alphabet – 26 hand-painted pieces. Fall Palette: Decor & Art

I'm loving a new installment in Style at Home magazine called Decorating Palettes where they feature in a 10-part series on colour in specific rooms.  October's issue features a space by designers Erin Feasby and Cindy Bleeks of Toronto design firm, Feasby & Bleeks Design.  I'm loving the palette here which is a mix of beachy naturals, tropical purples and citrine.  To me it has that feel of vintage tapestry and immediately I thought of art work or photography that might compliment this palette.  Lots of the same colours purples, hints of greens and yellows and naturals.  So I've combined them (most from Poppytalk Handmade) for inspiration.  A nice fall combo.  (Interior photography by Virginia MacDonald for Style at Home (Oct/11).

New Art Show: Rooted by Amy Rice

One of my favourite artists, Amy Rice has two shows happening this month and what's cool is one is in the US (Philadelphia, PA) and one here in Canada (Victoria, BC).  The first one I'm mentioning is Rooted, at the Art Star Gallery in Philadelphia, PA. (October 7th through November 20th)
In this body of work, I have used artifacts; found items and uncommon mediums: prints on antique handwritten letters of love and loss, feed sack bags from my family farm, antique atlas pages, and the string from last year’s morning glories among other things. Rooted celebrates 100% completion, hard work paying off, fall festivals, and earnest endeavors.-Amy Rice 2011

Awesome Slaw = Creamy Asian Vegetable Slaw

By Jeannette Ordas of Everybody likes Sandwiches

Slaws are seen as a summertime salad, but that's just silly. A tomato salad isn't going to be delicious in the middle of winter, but a rustic & hearty cabbage slaw works year round. But when you add something a bit more unexpected to the ingredient list, get ready for a flavourful salad that you'll want to put on regular rotation.

This slaw is full of broccoli, green onions, red peppers, carrots, radishes and of course, cabbage. Freshly grated ginger, soy sauce and a hit of spicy sriracha give this salad bite, while greek yogurt and mayonnaise lend a lovely creaminess. There's really something special about this slaw. It's a favorite at family gatherings and it's a salad that I'll sneak late-night fridge bites from when we've got leftovers.

Pair this with your main dish to add colour and texture to your next meal. This weekend is Thanksgiving in Canada and I couldn't imagine a prettier side dish. Simple to prepare, delicious and beautiful.

Creamy Asian Vegetable Slaw
1/2 head of green cabbage, shredded
1 head of broccoli, thinly chopped
4 green onions, diced
1 carrot, grated
1 red pepper, cut into thin strips
1 bunch radishes, sliced

Dressing:
1/3 cup greek yogurt
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
juice of 1 lime
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons honey
1 1/2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
a few shakes of roasted sesame oil
a few shakes of sriracha or the hot sauce of your choice

1/4 cup toasted almonds, roughly chopped
1/4 cup dried cranberries

Toss together the slaw ingredients in a large bowl. Set aside. Whisk together the dressing and pour over salad. Add almonds and cranberries and toss to combine. Serve.
